Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the body
lacks sufficient thyroid hormone. Since the main purpose of thyroid
hormone is to "run the body's metabolism", it is understandable
that people with this condition will have symptoms associated
with a slow metabolism.
Hypothyroidism - CAUSE
There are two fairly common causes of hypothyroidism. The first
is a result of previous (or currently ongoing) inflammation of the
thyroid gland which leaves a large percentage of the cells of the
thyroid damaged (or dead) and incapable of producing sufficient
hormone. The most common cause of thyroid gland failure is called
autoimmune thyroiditis (also called Hashimoto's thyroiditis), a
form of thyroid inflammation caused by the patient's own immune
system. The second major cause is the broad category of "medical
treatments". As noted on a number of our other pages, the treatment
of many thyroid conditions warrants surgical removal of a portion
or all of the thyroid gland. If the total mass of thyroid producing
cells left within the body are not enough to meet the needs of the
body, the patient will develop hypothyroidism.

Medicine Of The Day
Latin Name: Ledum Palustre
Common Name: marsh tea, wild rosemary
Description: Used for falls and bruises, puncture wounds, black eyes and other eye injuries, stings, rheumatic pain, sprains and strains, swollen extremeties, or face, or stiff tendons. Symptoms are better with cold compress, and worse at night with warmth (Lockie 105, Jonas 261).
Health Tip of the DayAvoid, long hours with headphones as it harms the eardrums irreversibly.
Health Quote of the Day There are three wicks you know to the lamp of a man's life: brain, blood, and breath. Press the brain a little, its light goes out, followed by both the others. Stop the heart a minute, and out go all three of the wicks. Choke the air out of the lungs, and presently the fluid ceases to supply the other centres of flame, and all is soon stagnation, cold, and darkness."
- Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
